The Pactio simulation is a highly innovative software tool that is used as part of an organised workshop, either in a classroom or in remote format, to deliver an intense experience that helps participants with a wide variety of experience levels to develop skills for dealing with challenges such as leading responsibly and sustainably, and engaging stakeholders.

How long does it take to run a PACTIO simulation workshop?

A PACTIO simulation workshop is typically run over a half day, but can be extended to a full day if an optional exercise in applying the methodology to a real case is included.

What is the role, mission and success measures in the PACTIO simulation?

You play the role of a project manager, who, in the early planning phase of a natural resources project, has been asked to figure out the exploitation plan, by working with a number of internal and external stakeholders in the project. Success is measured by the level of support obtained from the stakeholder group as a whole.

What are the limits on numbers of participants in a PACTIO simulation workshop?

We recommend that participants be organised in teams of 3 to 5 people, with a minimum of 3 teams and a maximum of 40 teams.

Pactio simulation: case studies

A few examples of how Pactio is used, all over the world (both in classroom and in remote workshop formats), by a variety of clients, in number of different contexts and for a wide range of participant experience levels and backgrounds.

At a leading university in the Netherlands, Pactio is used in a Masters program about sustainability, with up to 150 Masters students. The simulation gives the students a rapid experience of dealing with multiple stakeholders and all their complex and competing agendas. The experience gives the students a realistic context for them to apply and visualise the relatively abstract theory about stakeholder behaviour.

Pactio is run as a 1 day “Stakeholder Engagement Masterclass” that is delivered regularly for a leading development bank. Aimed at middle and senior level executives who have to make complex loan and investment decisions in projects across a variety of sectors including transport infrastructure and green energy, the simulation gives the participants an intense and risk-free experience that is intended to improve their judgement, in particular of the difficult balance across environmental, social and financial impacts.

In an increasingly popular elective about “Responsible Leadership” on the MBA program at one of India’s leading business schools, students gain some first hand experience of the sort of ethical decisions and dilemmas that they are likely to face in their future careers, but in the safety of a simulated environment.

In one of the USA’s top business schools, Pactio is a core component of the school’s flagship general management program. Attended by around 60 executives, many of who are moving into ‘C’ level roles, the simulation gives them an accelerated experience of devising a stakeholder strategy, and thus they gain greater understanding of the complex political, social and external stakeholder dimension of their organisations.
